Retro-inspired platformers are a wonderful thing, and here’s our reason. While the running and jumping of our youth was often ruined by some oaf opening the curtains or truly woeful scrolling, this decade is free of such piffling concerns. As should always have been the case, there’s no third party interference between player, ground and squishy death.
Except, that is, when developers force players to faff around entertaining dull minigames. Rather than travelling from the beginning of a level to a door at its end, there’s the compunction here to complete disorienting challenges, earning items that should simply have appeared as if by magic. And the collision detection’s a bit wonky. So, beautiful but flawed, then…
