X180: Dragon Age: Origins

An anonymous contributor is given the reigns to flip X360′s faultless opinion

It may be X360 Editor Simon Miller’s favourite game, but that doesn’t mean it’s any good. Join us now, for X360’s X180, where we flip an opinion of a mammoth game.

Before I focus on the fact Dragon Age is simply a wafer thin remake of practically every other swords & sorcery RPG, let’s look at its biggest flaw: the visuals. For a company pushing the graphical envelope in Mass Effect 2, which was released a mere three months after Dragon Age, what Bioware has achieved with Origins, is what I technically call, a dog. This is one ugly game. Flat, un-detailed textures cover literally every surface; coupled with dull lighting and a totally uninspired art direction. Remember Peter Jackson’s Oscar winning films? Well, so do Bioware.

These environments wouldn’t look out of place on the original Xbox; and that’s before we even look at the character models. Lip-synching, eye movement- all are highly realistic… in Mass Effect 2. Here, the characters are about as convincing as the kids in your local elementary school-play; the dialogues about the same too. Even if you ignore the ‘Lord Of Rings’ style approach, this is boring clichéd nonsense that I’ve seen a million times before; ever played Baulder’s Gate… yeah, same game.

Furthermore, the combat’s ripped from KOTOR, only not as in depth or controllable as the PC version. The choices are about as interesting and detailed as a choose your own adventure book from the 70s, and some may say it’s as self indulgent as they come. Dragon Age? Dragon Rage more like!

And here I was, after playing and completing this game I was under the impression that this game was good. How silly of me, it’s good that the internet exists to tell me I’m actually wrong.

And here was me sitting here thinking that if you enjoyed a game you could overlook some of its flaws, alas i guess thats not allowed!

I won’t rant but i just figured that the graphics suffered due to the sheer size of the area’s that you explore in the game. I mean do these people not realise that disc’s have a limit to the amount of information they can carry??? Frak, I ranted after all!!

and in the last page, why is everyone fighting each other?

    • Bomby said:

If you choose to destroy the Urn of Sacred Ashes and Leliana is in your party she will attak you to try and stop you!

You don’t even get the option to try and talk her round, so if she’s your lover you just slay her in cold blood. Harsh!!!

    • Bomby said:

ah, ivv never had leliana with me when i destroyed it,still, this x180 is a load of rubbish and really bad journalism.

    • Moozo said:

It’s not bad journalism. It’s a laugh and meant to provoke a reaction – which it clearly has :)

Yeah, never try and tell a fanboy he’s wrong about stuff he likes.
You get you eye’s bitten out lol

      damn right.

Hooray! We sparked a debate. You guys should know, we physically had to restrain Simon when we posted this article, it took ten of us, all from different magazines. Remember though, it’s supposed to be the opposite of our opinion, and seeing as we all loved Dragon Age, it’s only natural that we had to get someone who really hated it.

    • Dude Unduli said:

Indeed, I hear what your saying Mr Lynch. I have no problem with people disliking things i like, as long as they do it in an intelligent way.
I particularly have a problem when people complain about graphics in games that are really huge. As i said in my earlier post with the large areas and the amount of different dialogue options there are in Dragon Age, something had to suffer!
