Is Bluray Better Than DVD?

Has Microsoft been a little short sighted?

Whatever your views on the two rival consoles are at the moment, it’s safe to say that the major difference between the 360 and the PS3 is the fact that Microsoft’s console lacks the storage space that Bluray provides. In terms of technical capabilities both the PS3 and the 360 are on a pretty level pegging but as the console generation stretches into the distance, with no end in sight, will Microsoft eventually start feeling the pinch as DVD (even if it’s triple or double layered) starts to fall short of games requirements.

In a way we’ve already seen many accounts where the smaller DVD capacity has forced games across multiple discs and at least on a bare bones information level, texture detail, etc, compromises could be being made far more than we realise. Microsoft has always stated that the DVD was more than future proof, but that was five years ago now and with games like Final Fantasy XIII proving that Bluray is a far more efficient disc, DVD and the 360 could begin to look out of date really quickly.

What do you think? DVD or Bluray? Is the 360 at risk of losing the graphics race if DVD can’t deliver the goods? Let us know what you think below…

It’s hard to say really since no one really buys the same game on both consoles. Graphically, games on both consoles appear to look a tiny bit better on 360. However, the console exclusives argue that the PS3 is better. Unfortunately part of the arguement could be that 360 hasn’t had any major exclusives since Gears 2 that i’ve been interested in (ODST doesn’t count since it was made to the same quality as Halo 3, which is older than Gears 2) and that component isn’t as good as HDMI.

Overall I think both formats are capable of the same quality graphics (in the right hands), so the fact that BD has more storage will begin to show in the next few years.
