I agree with gugs. It was a pretty good film that tried to incorporate and yet distance itself from its origins. William Hurt was good but Matt LeBlanc was great and most of the people who didn't like the film when it came out were biased cos he played Joey in Friends and he wasn't acting dumb. My ex was one who was of that opinion. Hmmm maybe that was a nail in the coffin for that relationship

The Darkest Hour was pretty good. Enjoyed it muchly. 8/10

To be honest I have yet to see a film in which Gary Oldman hasn't been fantastic.

Leon still has the greatest depiction of a bad cop ever

Too true ^

I went to see Your Sister's Sister last night, thoroughly enjoyed it. Very funny in some places with quality acting and a nice romance. Might put a quid on Emily Blunt winning Best Supporting Actress.

Fright Night - 2011 - *****

I had a total blast watching this film. Really good. Normally I hate Farrell but he has a blast in the role and it really gets the balance of being funny and exciting and scary right.. in the same way that The Lost Boys does.

Lay the Favourite - **

This is why you never trust adverts on the tube. Great supporting cast wasted. Rebecca Hall in the lead role is so annoying I don't know how she got cast.. I don't know a lot about gambling either.. but it's just inane.. then weird.. then rubbish..

Yeh, Fright Nights pretty good, nice and enjoyable anyway...which is always good.

Further into my Werner Herzog season now, two more films.

Grizzly Man

True story of Timothy Treadwell, a failed actor turned eco-activist who spent his summer with grizzly bears. This is one of the best nature documentaries ive ever seen, at first formulaic but becomes increasingly deep and more thought provoking.

**** and 1/2.

The White Diamond

Another thoughtful doc hindered by a lack of human interest or story compared to grizzly man. Still watchable and occasionally beautiful.

***
What comes across in these docs is how few questions Herzog asks and how he often leaves the camera running for an almost uncomfortable period of time after the subject of spoken. This means there is often a silence but is followed by something unexpected out of the mouth of the interviewee.

The docs also all have a degree of stillness and lack of bombast that is refreshing.

Despicable Me

Got this in HMV for £3, my son adored it and so did I.

I loved the premise of it and the minions are so cute!

Great 'feel good' movie!

Not a film, didn't know where else to stick it.

I've just started started to watch The X Files - I know I'm way late to the game an'all that but it really is fantastic.

I got the complete boxset the christmas before last and ploughed through it all.. it really remains rather good. I mostly like the individual story episodes rather than the conspiracy 'smoking man' stuff but there's very few duff episdoes.

I picked up the "Millenium" (also by Chris Carter) boxset not long ago for $5. It only ran for 3 series and I'm about halfway through series 2 at the moment. It's aged well.

The Amazing Spiderman

A solid but unspectacular blockbuster thats a bit of a mixed bag. Great cast, well made and more humour. BUT the CG on the villain is poor, the score is intrusive and illplaced, its poorly paced at times, its not exciting enough for a Spidey movie and the world domination plot is really stupid (probably the stupidest Spidey movie villain plot so far).

Basically its about on par with Spidey 1 in terms of quality, it just doesnt earn its emotional beats and its in too much of a rush. But it gets points for Garfield, Stone, Sheen, etc.

Stay behind till after the credits for a teaser.

Still can't believe they restarted the story again. After these 3 (presumably there's a trilogy planned here) are they gonna do it again?

Hopefully Spidey makes the next Avengers film anyway

Who knows mate...

As for Avengers, dont hold your breath, till the Spidey rights revert to Marvel from Sony, it wont happen.
