True. I'm not wrong though. Rockstar's output generally controls hella clunkily. Although, watching/reading up on MP3, I am tempted to give it a go and find out for myself of they've managed to sort it out.

Just had a quick blast at the first couple of sections...

Like Holly, I'm playing on hard with the aim assist off and loving it. Even if it does take me a couple of attempts to get through it.

Bought this game. Played it for about an hour and hate it.
Controls are shit, cover system is shit. MP could be good but it ruined by the fact there isn't a region filter so you get lumped with people from all over the shop. In one lobby there were 2 people from america, one from france and one from poland  And I know there isn't a region filter because I asked Rockstar and got this reply
There is no region filter in the game so it can allow players from all over to play the game with each other. This allows friends from the US to play with friends in the UK. I hope this helps.

Firstly, let me say that I'm really sorry you're not enjoying it. However, there's something in what you said that points perhaps to why that might be.

It sounds like you're playing it as a cover shooter. We're all trained to do this; we've all played too many games in which we sit behind cover and wait for heads to pop up. Max Payne 3 is not this game. It is not a cover shooter. It is about run-'n-gun, it is about slow-mo and it is about skill. It is about diving straight at your enemy, executing five perfect headshots and everybody being dead before you hit the ground. Set the game to hard, use free aim and don't sit in cover; you will be flanked and die. Cover is for quick breathers only.

I think this is precisely this game's biggest problem; that people play it, see cover can be used and start playing it as a cover shooter. Start diving, start moving, and make sure it's hard enough.

If you still hate it, fine, but worth a try, no? Otherwise, how is it that I, along with several other forum users, are finding it to be one of thie best games of this gen? Must be how we're playing it, no?

Yeah, I'm playing it using nothing but my toes and tongue...

Nah, but Dan is right. Dive about a lot and shoot people inna face, in slo-mo. I haven't tried the MP yet though. I'll have to give it a go later before I go to work.

Cover is only used as a last option you need to take the fight to them, I understand why you hate this if your playing it like Gears or Mass Effect because thats not how the game is designed.

You need to get into a diffrent head space.

The MP is ok, had a few games and found it to be enjoyable, if not essential.

Overall its a crcaking game, BUT there are some frustrating elements to it.

1. The controls are a little clunky and i dont just mean the cover, i.e. Max steers like a Rockstar character (i.e tank-like) at times.
2. I would also respectfully (Dan, Holly, Pale) say that even though its not meant to be played like Gears of War, its no excuse for the cover not being quite good enough. Either make it work properly or dont include it at all.
3. The last man standing mechanic, although a good idea, also simply doesnt work sometimes, e.g. it places you in a position where you cant shoot the person you are supposed to be aiming at.

All IMO.

HOWEVER, i will say it absolutely did not ruin it for me. Id heartily reccomend this game.

I don't think any of us will sit here & say its perfect, it isn't, but what it gets right faaaaaar out weigh the small bad.

This will be a game that divides opinions, some people will play this & souly focus on the gameplay mechanics & get bored or frustrated.

And other will enjoy the simplicity & joy of that gameplay & being part of a live action block buster film with an incredible narrative, characters & story
that puts you right in and among the action, gets the pulse thumping & hands sweating like no film could ever dream of achieving.

I don't want to open up that old debate of, should games try to be films? & shouldn't gameplay take precedence over narrative & story?,
sometimes games have to be taken as a whole & not dissected.

The Uncharted series is a great example of this, the elements alone are fairly weak, but as a whole it becomes something special & that for
me is Max Payne 3, but better.

1. Euphoria physics mean he has inertia. Most games don't do this. Means you can't change direction on a dime. It's more realistic (to me).
2. You can be shot while you're in cover (which is I assume what you're talking about). Me personally, I prefer this. Sick of games in which a small wall from behind which a part of your head is clearly sticking out, protects you completely regardless. This means you're always thinking about your relative position to the enemy, their angles of fire. Keeps you on your toes. Helps keep the gameplay edge of seat.
3. Sometime you just have to die. I see this as a plus. Retry, do better, concentrate, up your skill.

Your negatives are my positives, basically. Everyone is entitled to feel however they feel about it, however. I understand your points, I just don't personally see them that way.

1. See your point about turning Dan, but its not just that. Stuff like aiming is a bit clunky too (after changing sensitivity settings it improves a bit).
2. Agree with your point again Dan. But im talking more getting into/out of cover, sometimes he does it badly, sometimes he just wont, some things that look like cover dont end up being cover, and some things that do, are not.
3. Ok ill concede that, even though i was including when you had painkillers left.

Please dont get me wrong, its all niggles chaps, i thoroughly enjoyed it like i say, i just got a tiny bit frustrated by it at certain points. It felt like i was trying to do something and the mechanics were maybe letting me down a little.

I would also agree with Holly that the positives far outweigh the negatives (posting a review in a sec on the review thread) and as a movie fan i was in hog-heaven.

I'm well aware it's not a cover shooter.
My problem with it is that when I die I get spawned in an area with loads of enemies and no painkillers. So I dive about killing a few enemies, end up with feck all health and then the rest of the enemies kill me. I then rinse and repeat this about 10 times. Which is just annoying.
I've tried to enjoy the game and i'll try again. But if I still hate it then i'll trade(who says the 2nd hand market is bad for gaming?!) it in for Ghost Recon. Which is a cover based shooter and maybe more to my liking.

Good-o.

Do give it a chance, though. Being a Rockstar game, things work a bit differently, but once the controls and the way the game should be played click, it is sublime.

Am just finishing Ghost Recon now. It's decent. Lots of flaws and niggles, but when it's good, it's very good and that makes up for it. Just.
