@Dan H

Just finished reading your review and I'm most definitely looking forward to it. I think you make a good point in the last paragraph about what the hell most other developers are doing.

Yeah, I overheard someone saying right here in this office 'It's not as good as Uncharted, because it doesn't even have the climbing bits.'

I think people are having difficulty understanding what a pure shooter is in this day and age. There are so few of them.

"Wait... I'm not getting XP? How do I know whether or not I'm having fun?"

This gen's design ideology of throwing together bits from columns a, b and c has taken its toll on the notion of purity, imo. Personally, its good to hear that Rockstar haven't compromised the franchises integrity by trying to bolt on things that don't belong (ala Human Revolution) just to increase appeal and sales.

In a game like Assassin's Creed, for example, I like that. A bit open-worldy, a bit RPGy, a bit fighty, a bit questy, a bit point-and-click adventury, a bit platformy. But you're right. Max Payne needs to be pure shooter and it is.

I've sent the missus out to get mine she's off today, I couldn't get that Blockbusters deals to work, in fact it caused the bank to stop my credit card & phone me!.

Next best deal was ASDA at 34 quid, now to get the vodka! & selection of savory nibbles, bring it on. :D

Near the end of chapter 2. First impressions...its old school in good and debatably bad ways IMO.

The old school checkpointing can be a little frustrating, especially in conjunction with difficulty spikes. But that may be given how cushy modern games are.

Am also finding the cover system and control systems a wee bit clunky.

That said, its niggles really. Its a seriously cool game, as narratively, story and character wise its the most cinematic and slick thing ive played in a good while. Ive done over 6 hours in one day, so it must be doing something right.

A Slick, stylish, cinematic, adrenaline & booze fuelled blast of a game.

There was a mantra in game design that the most successful games are 5 mins of well-designed fun repeated, .
Max Payne is this to the letter, its simple fun gameplay wrapped in an incredibly slick & stylish hollywood blockbuster.

The game mechanics are perfectly balanced I'm playing on Hard with no aiming assists and for me its the perfect difficulty.
There are times when I've been caught at a spike in the difficulty, but it never feels like a chore to retry in fact I enjoy getting the chance to rethink and execute the string of perfect kills.

Checkpoints are seen as old school now, but Max Payne is a game that's at its best when your out of painkillers, down to you last clip, slumped up against a column bleeding out, as a gang of armed thugs flank you left & right and your only option is to hit the air, pull the trigger and hope for the best.

Yeh, but Red Dead hs the advantage of not being a pure shooter, so its not as evident.

That said i dont particulary disagree with Hols judgement in most ways. I love the fact its basically an interactive Tony Scott film, even down to quick cuts and lens flares, etc.

Like the Gaurdian says, it really shouldnt be so much fun jumiping dow a hall shooting gang-bangers faces in, but it is.
