I didn't realise those three stones were the way to go at first because I hadn't ventured all the way to the back of the cave at that point... started to think I wasn't supposed to get through yet. But a bit of trial and error squeezed me through, not sure what the foolproof way through is.

That's funny about Lydia, she's carrying all of my crap at the minute and running to keep up behind my horse as I trot off into the sunset. Such a gentleman

Yes, as the others have said, with the three stones, line yourself up, run straight at the gates, and just as you activate the last stone by walking past, slam on the Whirlwind Rush or whatever it's called, and keep the button held down until you are through. It can be done without any additional words, and once you've got the method, even I can't get it wrong.

With Lydia at home in Whiterun my follower now is Benor, whom I picked up in Morthal. I see what you mean about questing alone, Bob, because it's a bit annoying when they pinch easy mobs. But as others have said, they're priceless in terms of taking on load. For example, I have taken to leaving a pickaxe with Benor. I've found it quite handy when out and about in the West around Markarth as it's a mining area and there tend to be seams of metal in the caves, plus smelting facilities in the towns and villages around there.

I particularly like stealthily creeping through the ruins until my companion suddenly yells out CHAAAAAAAAARGE and runs screaming to their death into a room full of now-fully-alert Draugr Deathlords.
If in doubt, put the kettle on.

Can't you bring up the conversation option and tell that bitch to chill, or is it either/ or?

It's never occurred to me to look.

You can ask followers to wait, but I found as soon as you get in a fight they come running to you.

I'm now questing alone, I just ended up killing them with my spells half the time. It was useful to have for the loot, but even with a follower I was always chucking stuff away. You just have to manage it correctly and get rid of the less expensive stuff. I don't touch anything unless it worth at least 50 coin.

I did the 7000 steps in about half an hour, not sure how anyone can find it tricky? I did have my horsey, which helped. There was a snow troll that was kinda tricky but that was about it. I found the bears before the previous village more of a handful. I can kill a dragon no problem, but bears, oh noooooooo. :?

Yeah... I had the sexy werewolf (Aela?) with me after marrying Jenassa and sending her home to be a good little wife. Aela looks rather foxy wearing the low cut Saviours Hide but I had to send her home when I started doing the Thieves guild and Dark Brotherhood quests because trying to sneak around with a companion is a complete waste of time.

However, they are useful as dragon bait, distracting the dragon while you sneak up behind it and start twatting it with a sword.

Follower always annoyed me, I'd have one for about 40 hours and then they would just die, either by walking into me whilst I was doing some kind of super death killy move followed by a shout of doom, or they fell off a ledge and dieded that way. I lost one in the great big underground cave thing, never could find his corpse.

Lydia followed me for a while but then got killed in the middle of a dungeon leaving me having to carry all her stuff. The NPCs really have shit for brains when it comes to combat.

Ive since been on my own, like the Littleest Hobo with swords and spells.

Where can I find either a dog or a floating robot?

You can get a dog from the stables in Markarth I think.

There are three possible dog companions, one of them is quest related and disappears if you complete the quest.

The only times I've lost an NPC follower is where they've been struck down by the enemy and I've accidentally mowed into them with a misdirected strike. When the follower runs out of health in battle with enemies they usually fall to one knee and don't participate further in battle.

In any case, what really helps out with followers is a quicksave button. I use it constantly in games like this (particularly the likes of Dragon Age). Many's the time I'm made a total horlicks of a fight, died, respawned from a quicksave point and got straight back into it, landed a few blows in on the right enemies and the same fight has been an absolute breeze. Much more frustrating if you're going from autosave points and having to go back to the start of the dungeon all the time, or having to faff about with manual saving.
