I certainly support the trade in market.
I went to my local game trading shop earlier. Traded in god of war 3,bayonetta and red dead redemption. I got batman:AA,enslaved and splinter cell:conviction. Plus I had to pay £20. Which is fine by me!

I used to love trade-in back in the days when I was on minimum wage and had no brass to spare. Nowadays though they absolutely take the urine. Bob mentioned in another thread that he got something like £15 trade on Enslaved... they'll whack that back on the shelf for £36.99 and some other mook will pay it and in a few weeks when he returns it... wash, rinse, repeat. Then there's the trade deals. I saw one in the paper today where you get New Vegas for 99p when you trade TWO of a list of selected games. All of the selected games were brand new releases... Fifa 11, Enslaved, Castlevania etc.

I mean maybe as I'm geting older I'm just becoming more cynical because now all I see is the suited GAME overlords swimming in their pools of monies, Scrooge McDuck style. Back in the old days when I had to walk 15 miles uphill each way to get to a game shop and trade in my well worn copies of PS1 and N64 games, at least you were given a fair price!

When it comes to 'recycling' old games I often either do straight trades with friends (something I even started up on this forum a fair while back) or sell on Ebay, then either buy online or use the cash to buy the games. And with supermarkets undercutting dedicated videogame retailers by such huge margins on recently released games, there's hardly ever reason to pay a full £40 for a new release anyway!

Yeah I agree with you Op, I use Ebay, Amazon Marketplace and Play Trade with old games. You get much more dosh for your games that way.

It's convenience though isn't it?

Although I was a little shocked that had hit so low so fast.

Presumably they know what they're doing.

The thing is I've already got far too many old games knocking about the place.

Oh I know, but I think what I'm trying to say is that in the past I was a huge supporter of the market because it gave us a sense of fairness for an expensive hobby. But with the console boom these past few years, it's just become another way to screw over the consumer.

I do however LOVE the idea that I can walk into a high street store and pick up a copy of an obscure title that may be a few years old for just a few quid whereas without the trade-in market I'd have either pay a premium price or compete online to win an auctioned one.

Depends where you go to trade. My local, independent place is good. For enslaved i'd probably get around £25 for trade in.

I got Enslaved on the release day (Friday), beat it and saw no sense in replaying it so i traded it in on the Monday.
I got offered £17 instore at my local indi retailer. The reasons given were that there's no MP and fairly little replay factor in the title so they expect to get loads back.
Contrast that with, say, MW2 which is still going 2nd hand at about £28 because of the online popularity.
I took it to Blockbusters and got Castlevania for a tenner plus Enslaved instead.

As for the quote in the magazine about the second hand market keeping prices up, does anyone actually believe that?
Some release day titles in Tesco are anything from £5-£10 cheaper than other retailers, so whats their profit margins?
My opinion is that £40 for a game which could last as little as 7-8 hours entertainment (SWTFU2) and then owning a useless disk is not good enough. If i can't sell it then its just an expensive coaster.
The second hand games market has become a Godsend for me, i've had a pretty crappy year employmentwise and had managed to squirrel away enough old titles to play in the lean months between A-list titles being released. Then when those titles appeared i used the older, completed games to subsidise the cost of the newer ones.
Which probably stopped my wife chopping em off in my sleep.
I have two friends called William Hill...what are the odds?
My dad used to hit me with a camera...i still have flashbacks.
