It was an alright idea, but in practise it's not great. If you want to play a certain map on a certain game mode you'll struggle - admins realised quickly that your server will be empty unless it has relatively popular settings. So if you fancy a spot of squad rush on one of the less popular maps then you're out of luck. Then, as the article highlights, there's a problem with tyrannical server owners. To be fair, in my humble opinion, if someone is paying their own money to host a public server then they should be able to do whatever they want in it (within reason). The fault is Dice's for not providing enough servers of their own.
I'm actually an admin of a server that a group of chaps I play with own which we occasionally use to play other clans. To make the server private the room has to be empty, meaning you have to kick 24 people if you want to play a clan match on the server you're paying for. Cue a dozen messages calling you names and threatening to murder your family.
