For The Mag: Would you tolerate in-game adverts?

Postby Dave Shaw on Mon May 28, 2012 9:10 am

Question two. Many of you may have seen the news last week that Sony has filed a patent for in-game advertisements that would interrupt play directly, play out, then resume gameplay at the point it was left.

Would you be able to tolerate this. Perhaps it would only occur once every hour or so. Would that really be so bad? We need to know!

Would I? Would I fuck (please excuse the profanity), It's bad enough having to endure ads on the likes of Last FM and the Dashboard (which is now rendered almost entirely useless). There is a thread elsewhere indicating more than a few forumites would ditch console gaming and turn to PC if things keep on in the direction they're going.

I would tolerate for titles that were free or significantly reduced, but if its for new titles that have cost me £40, id actually consider ditching my MS live membership right away. This would be simply unacceptable if you ask me.

There's no way that I could put up with ads, it would completely ruin the full experience. Can you imagine getting to end of Mass Effect or something, just for somebody to pop up and offer you car insurance? I know the same thing could be said for TV shows but I think because games are longer they're able to spend more time building things up.

I'd maybe be okay in multiplayer after every game or something while waiting in the lobby if it meant saving money but keep it out of single player!

I could deal with ads on the main menu/between games online if I really had to, but if they began to stop me playing something I'd paid for so they could try to sell me something else then I'd be gone. Having said that, if it was the same across all consoles and PC gaming then realistically I'd have no choice in the matter as I wouldn't give up gaming over it. It's similar to the online pass issue, I hate the idea and avoid games that use it, but if all games implemented it then I'd have no choice.

I can deal with ads if they fit in with the aesthetic of the game. But if they try to interrupt my play time, with a game I've already forked out for like some shitting ITV channel, then the game will warrant a full refund. I absolutely despise modern advertising and it's disgusting determination to swallow everything for it's own ends. Adblock is a frikkin' godsend as far as I'm concerned, I'll be damned if my safe gaming haven is going to be tarnished any more by ad execs than it already is. Know what ad's I want to see when gaming? Ads for more games! Not some grinning tart trying to convince me that if I smell like an exotic citrus fruit she'll definitely be up for it.
Bollox to this.
I'm off to pay my licence fee.

If the games were free? Yes.

If I have to pay for them? Hell no.

Do I have to watch adverts in a DVD I've bought? No...

Do I mind watching adverts during TV programs I don't pay for? No...

Would I pay for games that include adverts? Bollocks I would.

(yes, I run Adblocker on my phone. Fuck the ad's)

What a totally ridiculous and game breaking idea. The only way that I could see it happening is that if the advertising was non - invasive, i.e. on a wall in a game, or on the side of the bus in the game, otherwise, just a big fat NO.

It's all well and good for you all to say "that'd be the end, I'd of had enough" but we all know nobody here would actually stop buying games. It'd just give us something else to complain about.

I'd just crack on with my back log, to be honest. It's not like the graphics have that dated PS2 quality to them and I have more than enough games to last me a few generations. And it seems in it's desperate rush for our money that games are only going to become more of the same rather than anything genuinely new or innovative.

Say what now? Adverts when I game? They can do one. A big fat smelly one. I hate adverts, one of the reasons I got a PDR so I can skip past them when I watch telly.

Do I like it? No. Will I put up with it? Most likely. If it was in all games all of the time I would have to think long and hard (giggity) about other means to game (like ball on a stick). If it was just certain games (like XBLA) and/or just when you boot the game up, I could probs just about tolerate em. But if it is when I'm actually playing a game and I hear that effin Go Compare twat, they can F right off.

Now that I could deal with. Boot up the game and while the ad's are running go into the kitchen and get a tinny, come back when the ad has finished. Simples.

If the game cost me chuff all originally then i'd put up with them. Otherwise there's no chance.
I'm already sick of the bloody adverts on the dashboard! It's pretty obvious the new dashboard was designed to shove adverts in our faces, even though I already pay £30 a year to go on xbox live. I don't want them when playing games.
