For The Mag: Crytek to develop Homefront 2

Postby 360_Mag_Dave on Tue Sep 27, 2011 10:43 am

Do you care that Homefront 2 has been passed over to Crytek? What will they bring to it that Kaos Studio's couldn't? Will it make a difference?

Does that mean the mulitplayer will be handed over to the lot who used to do Timesplitters a-la Crysis 2?

Don't care, but I reckon it'll look pretty.

Not played Homefront as apparently the MP is nothing special and the Campaign is about 5 hours long (anyone would have thought EA made it). However, Crysis 2 was mint so id be interested.

I had high hopes for Duke Nukem Forever because Gearbox were doing it but the reviews seem to think it was naff (not played it myself). Crytek developing means it 'could' be exceptional.

Actually, it's those guys that will be developing the entire thing.

I used to think Bethesda were the bees knees, turns out they aint.

Crytek, it surely depends which guys and if they care about the game.

Well they probably deserve another crack at it then. Personally I didn't think Timesplitters was all that but then I wasn't a games journalist with a constant posse of players to get the most out of it in pre-online days and Haze wasn't all bad.. Well it was but it had the feel of a game that ran out of development time.

Homefront was an excellent premise that was wrapped up in fairly run-of-the-mill game mechanics. it's not that Homefront was bad, it just wasn't very inspiring. It was pretty enjoyable in some places and had some good moments, like the body pits in the stadium and the intensity of the bridge level at the end. But ultimately a lack of vision, muddy graphics, weak

I think Crytek are pretty much the perfect team to take the idea and really make the sequel what the first game should have been. So yeah, colour me excited.

I don't think that it actually matters who makes the game. If it hasn't got a good gameplay mechanic then it won't be any good. Just because a developer has made a good game in the past isn't actually a guarantee that everything will be good. The prime example is Gearbox and DNF. So we should just judge each game on it's on merits and not by who developed it

I think the difference with Forever is that Gearbox inherited a 13 year old game, polished it up and rushed ti to market knowing it'd be an assured financial success. Forever was the victim of too many cooks over-egging the pudding over the course of more than a decade. It looked like, played like and acted like a 13 year old game would.

Crytek taking on Homefront 2 is a completely different setup, with them likely developing the game from the ground up. And every developer should be given the benefit of the doubt based on previous successes. Crytek have earned that with their recent titles and just as Gearbox has my faith that a Duke game that THEY themselves build will be great, Crytek has earned my faith that their involvement with HF2 will be nothing but a good thing.

1. I think the people who made the first one should have another shot. Everyone should get two shots before they are booted as a studio. Everyone should get one mistake.

2. Crytek. Hmmm. Crysis 2 is proof that all you have to do to convince people that you have better graphics is to say that you have better graphics. You don't even actually have to have better graphics, people will believe it anyway. So, in that spirit I would like to say just one thing - I have a massive willy.
If in doubt, put the kettle on.

Crytek did actually back it up though.

Have you heard of Optrex?

I had genuinely typed out half a reply asking was this "Optrex" a graphics engine or middleware or summat. Then I got the joke. I am ashamed
