I'm not sure that they did, actually...
I'm pretty (100%/definitely) sure that they didn't say it whilst banging the gavel on each utterance though, as is the common misconception, seeing as British judges have never (outside of fiction) used gavels...

It's common parlance.

I spotted a sentenance that had too many words in it and didn't make a whole lot of sense in one of the reviews.. Sadly I was in the pub reading at the time and after a few more pints I couldn't remember where.. If I get time I may re-read all teh reviews so I can spot it again.
