Online Gaming For Noobs

Postby runnerboy32 on Tue Jun 30, 2009 8:31 pm

I played my first home video game on a Sinclair ZX80 and have subsequently owned a ton of other computers & consoles but I've only just hooked my 360 up to the net and gone online. I'm getting destroyed on COD4, Burnout, PGR4 on a regular basis but would like to know what I should do as an online noob, how to create a friends network (most of my 'real life' friends aren't gamers and the one who is owns a PS3) and where's the best place for me to start without getting my ass kicked - my average lifespan on COD4 is about 20 seconds.

Cod4 can be somewhat unnerving when playing online because of the unforgiving nature of the game- a few shots and you're dead. The COD4 masses are somewhat hardcore- just ask our very own Henri Lloyd who is ranked pretty high in the world in the game.

THe best thing to do is practice, preferably with some peeps you meet online. If you play Halo 3 then feel free to add me. My friend and I practice on custom games and we could give you a few pointers.

Good luck!

Don't listen to any pointers Septic gives you about flying Banshees as he's a huge failure at that. x']

Try a game online when it is released, or within the first week or so. The longer a game has been on sale, the more hardcore the players will be.

Or, and this is probably the most realistic advice...... get used to being one of the worst players online.
I'm guessing from your post your in your late 20's or early thirties?
The kids today are just too good for most of us, so practice as much as you can, but always know you're probably always going to be not as good as them, but anytime you can put one over on them, it feels so much better.

I've been online with XBL for 3 years, and I'm still terrible compared to most people online, so I try and play with friends or when I do play in ranked matches, I expect to finish about halfway in things like COD, or hold my own against other average players on FIFA etc.

Practise is definitely the only way to get better at online games, especially on COD4, because as someone said the user base is extremely hardcore and dedicated. Just keep playing; find a game mode you like and stick to it. Certain objective based modes on COD4 just add one more thing to worry about; have a go on deathmatch or team deathmatch where you can just concerntrate on killing people. Suss out what the best weapon is for you. I used to be absolutely abysmal at COD4, whereas now I'm just quite rubbish. :D

Oddly enough, I was quite averagely cack at CoD4 but find myself regularly in the top 3 of the scoreboard when I play BF:BC.

Though both are "Modern Warfare" FPS's I find that the much larger maps and different "classes" of Bad Company suit my style of play much better than CoD4's "choose your own class" ever did.

Anyone else find they play some FPS's better than others? or is it just me?

Most definatley. I think, for me at least it's to do with the way the weapons control. I'm completley opposite to you, I couldn't get on with bad company for love nor money but COD and to an extent Halo, I can deal with.

I'm still not that good online compared to the hardcore but usually place about middle of the pack when playing COD4. That is unless I'm playing with Henri and then you can guarantee I'll be bottom everytime with one kill and he'll be top with at least 30 :?

I'm really looking forward to playing some Call of Jurez MP today to see how good I am with that as the gunplay is very COD like and people haven't been playing forever so the field should be a bit more balanced. I just hope the maps are decent so it has a bit of longevity.

*EDIT* Runnerboy, whats your gamertag? I'll add you if you fancy playing something with someone else who's pretty retarded at online gaming.

CoD4 hardcore? Just about everyone online is rubbish, seriously. Halo 3 has all the sad bastards that can calculate every bloody ricochet to ping round the map and hit your head. Its much harder online than CoD4.

Not when me and Leelee are playing.

 :)

My advice is dont give up on it, stick with it as it is such a good game.

If you have just started

id recommend using this set up

M16

3 flashes

Stopping power

deep impact/extreme conditioning

Ill play some games with you if like chap :) but if you haven't got a party of people to play with ,just play mercenary Team Deathmatch as no parties are allowed in there, that would be good place to learn how to duck and where to hide, bullet penetration areas etc

And basically Team Deathmatch is so simple, run to their end of the map where they spawn and hopfully your team will follow and just push them back and keep killing them, then you will notice that they are not spawning there much no more,so go to the other end of the map and do the same thing, keep on the pressure..

Many noobs make the mistake of hiding in a spot for a long time and killing someone as they run past, but then they dont move,so you are instantly grenaded or killed 2 seconds later, always keep on the move, even when you snipe, kill maybe 2/3 people from one spot then change.

dont fire unless you know you can kill him, you dont want to make yourself appear as a red dot on the map for no reason, but dont worry it's all about knowing the maps i think, once you know your way around you will be fine.

Ye i always found that i was pretty good at Battlefield 2 - but since then (apart from a brief spell on Halo 3) i have been rubbish at FPS's online MP

Now driving on the other hand - thats far more fun - getting a good race going - its a lot harder to be annoyingly better than someone in a driving game - the margins are a lot closer (sure some people are really good) but if you both have the same car at least you know your machinery has the same stats and its down to you (plus u cant be randomly killed)

Other than that what else is there online - and how come WOW or some copy of it hasnt invaded the 360 - its surely a pretty simple port. Any of the many MMORPG's available would be pretty good on the 360 - they can be really good for noobs (people are usually more helpful) - esp if it was one that wasnt entirely based on precise mouse clicks but on tactics and preparation (like in the good old days of KOTOR)

Come on MS give us a good MMORPG or other relaxed online experience
