1. Davd Braben - Elite.. Possibly the greatest game ever written.

Why does everyone forget about Ian Bell.

Didn't forget about him but I don't think he's done much else has he? Braben is also working on The Outsider which has potential to be awesome.

My 5 would be:

Peter Molyneux (Populous, Syndicate, Dungeon Keeper and many, many more games I have enjoyed over the years.)
Julian Gollop (X-COM series, Laser Squad and Lords of Chaos)
Shinji Mikami (Resi, DMC)
Dave Jones (Lemmings, Blood Money, GTA, Shadow of the Beast and Crackdown)
Chris Metzen/Bill Roper (Warcraft, Diablo & Starcraft)

I’ll probably think of others and think damn didn’t add those in but I’ll stick with these 5 for now.

ClownTrousers makes a good point John Carmack should be there or thereabouts.

I would also think Gabe Newell (Valve) and Muzyka/Zeschuk would probably vie for my list

Shigeru Miyamoto (for creating some of the best and original things ever....ever. My fave game is Ocarina of Time so this is a no-brainer)
Hideo Kojima (some don't like MGS but to be able to bring complex plot and narrative to games plus breaking the 4th wall, he is amazing)
Shinji Mikami (Capcom are my favourite 3rd party developer and this guy has been involved in most of their best stuff)
Peter Molyneux (he's despised by some but you have to admit that his games are always bringing something unique and new)
Ray Muzyka (co-director of Mass Effect, KOTOR, Baldur's Gate, Jade Empire etc, and he's a pretty good author too).

Others would include Gunpei Yokoi (creator of Metroid and the Gameboy), Suda 51 (the guy is just crazy and I love it) and Ken Rolston for Elder Scrolls IV.
