I half agree CW....i would have left two Face for number 3 also.
But, that said, i still quite liked the message of the end, Joker tearing down the most moral man there is to his level, batman stepping up and taking the blame. I thought that was really interesting.
I think its becuase Nolan had no intention of doing a number 3 and wanted to do that story, until they green lit his new small budget arthouse project (Inecpetion...you may have heard of it) so that he would.

I think Nolan is the closest thing to Stanely Kubrick we have working today. Hes an exceptional director who treats his audience with a degree of intelligence..
