Razorus' Quick Review

Postby Razorus on Sat Mar 13, 2010 4:01 am

Hi. Since I work in a cinema, it's more than likely I'll be seeing new films before any of you, barring pirate copies of course.
I will therefore update this page occasionally with thoughts on new releases. Due to the nature of my job, I'm not always able to see the entire film.
You may not agree with my opinions but I'll just tell you what the films involve without spoilers if I can help it.

Green Zone - it's like Bourne in Iraq. Kinda like an episode of 24. It tries to be clever but doesn't handle the political stance as well as other Iraq War movies. Hurt Locker is better in terms of smarts and emotion but if you want an exciting thriller, this is decent.

Alice in Wonderland - It's ok. Nothing special. Very weird at times. Missed the ending but I can imagine what happens. Stephen Fry is awesome. Johnny Depp is basically Jack Sparrow at times. Story more like a Narnia adventure rather than a strange trip in a weird world like I imagined.
There's even a mini-epic battle at the end. Listen out for the Jabberwocky's voice, nice cameo.

Shutter Island - was really looking forward to it. Saw about 40 minutes from around middle-ish bit. VERY interesting and intriguing. Wanted to learn more. Great acting. Great plot. Sinister. Strange editing (for those who notice such things) and I couldn't help noticing several continuity errors (just stuff like a leaf on someone's jacket). Maybe I'm weird. Anyway. Leo is a damn good actor whether you like him or not. Can't go wrong with Ben Kingsly. Will review more when (if) I get a chance to see it in full.

I used to work at cineworld, was pretty cool for awhile. Are you what they call a 'Multifunctional'? or have you taken on a different role?

I do a bit of everything. 3 main tasks = box office, retail, ushering.

I saw 95% of Shutter Island. Good film. However, it's not Scorsese good, if that makes sense. He hasn't lost his touch, it's just that this film is different to his last few. DiCaprio is very good and the plot is intriguing. Some may find the twist a bit meh, others may like it. I liked it but I could see it coming.

Yep thats what I did. Box office was pretty awesome, as it had chairs. Floor was good, though we never got any torches :( Concessions was the worst.

I was there for 2 years managed to get into projection for my last year there, thats where you wanna be, get to see the films after you've spliced all the reels together :D

lol, sounds exactly like what I have. Chairs in box, no torches on screens, and retail is horrible. I dunno about being a projectionist. I don't intend to stay working here for more than a year tbh.

SIR Ben Kingsley is an utter twonk.
If in doubt, put the kettle on.

Raz, forgive me for paraphrasing.

Green Zone - Nothing like Bourne, in any way shape or form, sorry. Thats why audiences got confused when they went to see it. His character in this is not pysically adept, or even that clever. I thought it was more like Jack Ryan film really, a thriller about a guy completely out of his depth, in a situation that is 10 pay scales above him. Its well made but not as compelling as it should have been. They should have cut out the Hollywood nonsense about crashing choppers and gunfights and done a proper 70' style thriller, for 1/3 the budget. Would have made an interesting movie in that capacity.

I know Hurt Locker got a lot of stick on here and it isnt for everyone (the huge amount of hype cant help) but the film is more tense, better acted and overall more compelling as you dont know the end (which you do with GZ), on only 1/4 of the budget. Goes to show money doesnt mean anything. I think the mistake the PR department made with HL is they advertised it as a war film. Its not, its a thriller/drama about an obsessed, closed-off bloke who happens to be in a warzone, the Iraq conflict is almost beside the point, the film could have been set in Nam or WW2 or even starred a bomb disposal cop.

As for Alice, competely agree, its chewing gum for the eyes with no emotional weight and very little characterisation. No 3d, it would have barely made its money back. Avatar had the davnatage of having better 3d to start off with and actual characterisation.

Shutter Island doesnt interest me. If it starred Mark Ruffalo as lead it might though (amazing in Zodiac , should have got some award recognition). fact is Leo is a fine actor but lacks gravitas for role such as this. He looks like a computerised older version of himself from when he was in Gilbert Grape, rather than an actual human being. Its just off-putting.

Clash of the Titans is very disappointing and very rubbish. If you insist on watching it, save some money and see it in 2D. It won't make a difference.
How to Train Your Dragon is good.
Kick-Ass is forking great!

The problem with Titans is that its too dumb to be fun, everything about it is so flawed that it constantly takes you out of the proceedings and never really just lets you roll with it. Its not terrible but its not good either, was very disappointed with it, was expecting so much more.

Exactly. I enjoy a good dumb action movie once in a while, but Titans was just so poorly made. So many plot holes, crap costumes and effects for the most part, useless 3D, Australian accents coming out of nowhere and Danny Huston has ONE LINE.
