How developers can rock out to my respect

Postby Venomous Albino on Tue Jul 13, 2010 4:34 pm

"A rhythm-action music game lives or dies by its soundtrack". This is something than in one form or another usually gets stated in a review of the latest Rock Band or Guitar/Band/DJ hero game, and obviously to an extent it's completely true. For example, I own Rock Band 2 and the soundtrack on that game was a big contributing factor when I was deciding between it and Guitar Hero 5, which in my opinion has one of the worst soundtracks in any music game ever.

This got me thinking about what - in an ideal world - I'd like to see from a music game, especially now since both Rock Band and Guitar Hero have huge DLC libraries on hand. Here's my idea: you buy a Rock Band game devoid of any music - but still obviously containing all the graphical assests and whatnot - for the same amount as a normal full-priced game (£40, for arguments sake), and in the box you're given a code which entitles you to go onto the Rock Band store and download £40 worth of DLC of your choice for free, which allows you to completely tailor the game to your musical tastes, and any DLC you want after you've reached the £40 mark you then have to pay for. This way, I'd be guaranteed to like every song in the game and if a developer were to do this I for one would respect them a lot more than if they had tried to cater for everyones tastes - something GH5 tried at and failed abysmally - and I'd be far more inclined to spend extra money on more tracks.

I have to disagree with you there, Guitar Hero's DLC is an absolute p!ss take compared to Rock Bands.
Not only is the choice a friggin' joke but the price point is...well, typical Activision.

Rock Band is the only music game worth a damn so far and unless GH6 gets a bit more daring with it's tracklist and doesn't just give us what RB DLC already does, it'll be a dead IP.
Don't get me started on the track export for GH, too. 'kin 'ell!!!!

Release Rock Band: PInk Floyd and Guitar Hero: Red Hot Chili Peppers and I'll be happy.

But yeah good idea. It'll never happen though.

If I remember correctly, The Chilis are the next band to get their own game. Not sure if it's GH or RB, though.

True, it probably will never happen.... but I can dream. And hey, if you can complement me on an idea or opinion of my own, then anything's possible right? :D

And while we're on the subject of band-specific releases, give me Rock Band / Guitar Hero: Queen and Rock Band / Guitar Hero: Bad Religion and I'll be happy.

I read somewhere a few weeks ago that Brian May hinted that Guitar Hero: Queen was in the works, but so far - to my knowledge anyway - absolutely nothing's been confirmed on the matter. I hope it is true though, although I'd rather Rock Band: Queen, as I could then import all the tracks to Rock Band 2 and trade the Queen disc in.

The Prodigy Rock Band.

Now that would be mental.

But I still wouldn't get it, music games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero are a big pile of meh IMO.

No it wouldn't..

They might just make a decent DJ Hero 'band' but they're not really a band and they do really play any instruements do they?

Course they do. Fat of the Land was half guitars, half wig-out ravey bollocks.
If in doubt, put the kettle on.

Lol.. Well that was perhaps a bit more cross over.. but I bet all the guitars where sampled.. Doesn't Liam Howlett make all the music himself?

Think they had a guitarist on that one. Generally it's just Liam, for good or ill.

Lol.. well in that case I'll allow them to make Rock Band: Prodigy - Half of Fat of the Land Edition.

Until then they can f**k off back to making sh*t music for people who don't know any better.

I knew something like this was going to be brought up.

The Prodigy have a drummer and a guitarist at the very least playing with em when they play live.

I wouldn't have sugeested it otherwise.

Liam produces all the music himself, sometimes but very rarely he does have a co producer. They have had a live guitarist playing on tracks since there second album Music for the Jilted Generation.

Guitar Hero: Queen is a go, according to OPSM!
Hopefully it'll be a Metallica and not... well everything else Guitar Hero touches.
