No it's the best game of ALL time. not the game I had the most fun playing in 1991.

By that argument the "Best Game Of All Time" will always be the latest Triple A release...

Exactly, that would be stupid.

Yes. What's the matter with that.

The question is 'what is your favourite game of all time' not 'what is your current favourite game?'. It includes all games across all time, so putting a game into context is part of the question because it includes all time, not just this time.

To be a favourite game of all time it has to have stood the test of time.

Tetris is an all time classic.. Doesn't matter what happens with graphics in the future.. it wouldn't matter the gameplay can't be improved.. It's as addictive now as it's always been.

This weeks triple A title is next weeks bargain bin fodder. That's the trouble with that arguement.

Firstly a game doesn't have to be good to stand the test of time, just look at noughts and crosses that's crap.

Secondly a lot of these games don't actually stand the test of time. When is the last time you played Elite or Streets of Rage 2? Spend 20 minutes playing Mario and you'll soon realise you'd rather be playing Mario Galaxy.

Edited for my stooopidness, we seem to be answering a different question than the original how did that happen

But is Mario Galaxy as good now as Super Mario was when it was released? Obviously the games of today are going to be technically better than previous generation games, but it doesn't mean they're better than older games were in their time. I mean, how many people have said their favourite game of all time is a current-gen title? Not that many.

Noughts and Crosses hasn't stood the test though has it? Chess has. That's a classic right there.. Still played by millions around the world.

Secondly I play Tetris on my GBA all the time.. Elite less so granted.. Streets of Rage 2 has dated badly and hasn't stood the test of time.

I'd rather play Super Mario World than Galaxy any day of the week.

Well yeah Mario might have been the best game when it was released but it's rubbish now so how can it be the best game of all time? You just cant tell a proper story with 8 or 16 bits. Where as now games are rivalling cinema for entertainment value.

Super Mario World is still a fantastic game. The graphics are stylised perfectly and haven't really dated a bit.

Cinema is an interesting example. Would Citizen Kane be improved with colour? Does The Godfather need CGI robots?

Chess has stood the test of time! Are you mad man? It's changed loads, and it'll probably change again now that all you have to do is memorise opening moves.

Anyway, I suppose what I am arguing is that if you want a quick little blast of arcade goodness then old games are fine but you couldn't have a good, popper, in depth game before the 64 bit consoles came along (PCs Being the exception).

No but cinema has had the technology to tell a good story since recording sound along with it came along. Games have only had that capability sice the PS1, N64 etc.

story schmorey.. That's like the least important aspect of a game.. Hence the many many classic games released prior to PSone..

OK but game play wise games have gotten better too. Older games did simple things well, like your example Tetris. But now games can do simple things well, like Puzzle Quest, and sophisticated things well. We now also have better graphics, better sound, online multilayer, user generated content the list goes on. How anybody can say that Tetris is the pinnacle of all games is beyond me.

And of course all of that's what makes a great game...
