The price of \"Next Gen\"

Postby Cerebral Wolf on Thu Feb 09, 2006 9:52 am

I want to ask the question "is the 360 and HD TV's really worth it?"

I was thinking yesterday about the serious ammount of cash i have spent just to play games on my little white box.. lets think about it.

First i bought my 360 on the day of release.. i got a premium pack from Game with 5 games that cost me around £600 for everything that day i think.

Then i bought a surround sound set up to really apperciate the quality of the sound that comes with all the games now that they are 5.1 compatible. That was another £400

Then i bought myself a HD TV.. that cost me £1200 in the local powerhouse, just to see what all the fuss was about and how "next gen" HD Games look with the 360.

Not to mention since the original purchace of the 360 i have bought COD2 and DOA4.. thats about another £100.

And last but not least a gold scart cable, speaker wires and a new component cable.

All in all we're looking at a total of around £2300 just to play games. Is it really worth it? Am i happy? Do i think its ground breaking?
Well, thinking about it now its alot of cash, but i was happy to spend it so why not. I'm happy with the experience and though HD gaming is not quite the mind blowing experience i expected it to be (i.e i still get alot of "Jaggies" on cars etc in PGR3 while in the garage etc) im definatly happy with my gaming experience as a whole, though having said that i have been a gamer ever since i was a little lad and my dad bought me my first games console the NES. I've never looked back and i do see it as a full time hobby of mine. I dont think its totally ground breaking yet but the tech is definatly there and we will see mega improvments over the next year or so i hope. But this poses another question.. Casual gamers, Non hardcore gamers, People with familys and no gaming addiction..could they, Would they? It a huge sum of money just to play a round of Dark ops on PDZ every weekend while the wife is in the bath! What do you guys think? how much has it cost you to go "Next gen"? and are you happy with it?

I've got a media center PC to add onto that list of yours, too :)
Yes, it costs a fair bit of cash. But it's not 'just to play games' - your HDTV and 5.1 system will make TV and films better, too.

You should tell her to wash more :)

Why did you buy a gold SCART cable? SCART isn't HD.

I'm sticking to my old 28" widescreen TV for now, the games still look good and it's got built in anti-aliasing! (ie it's not so sharp so it automatically blurs the edges)

I just spent £300 on a GFX card for my PC that can do anti-aliasing, and all I had to do was plug it into my old TV.

Damnit.

You said you had a wife :?

And you could probably build your own media center for about £400 - £500.

Questions have question marks ;)
You could just as easily have been referring to yourself.

Personally, when my wife is in the bath, I make a point of putting down the pad and going to 'visit'.

when i was not single.. i found it got boring after around a year sleeping with the same person. let alone the 2 years i was with my last girlfriend. i would rather play PDZ than jump in the bath with her lol.

and right now im far too single to care lol
though, speaking experience.. i find women dont play games enough and moan too much.

I've spent a lot.

What really amazes me is how Wolf spent £2000+ on a 360, 7 games, a surround sound system and a HDTV - all in the space of around 2 months - despite the fact that he always seems to mention a distinct lack of job. By going to work, I'm obviously in the... wrong line of work :?
