X360 Magazine Critics Choice Award 2010 – Mass Effect 2
Best-selling independent Xbox magazine X360 recently polled its writers and contributors in order to determine 2010’s finest 360 game…
The final result, that you can see for yourself in issue 68 of X360, on sale 26 January, will take reader votes into account too, but we thought we’d offer a sneak peek by releasing our critics’ vote early. Besides, we wouldn’t want to spoil the controversy caused when our readers lead King Of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match to its surprising and highly irregular victory. Or perhaps something else more sensible. What do you think? Have our staff got it right this year?
The results certainly make for interesting reading, especially given our convoluted and multi-tiered methodology. Splitting all titles released this year into ten categories, our winner was decided via two votes – one to decide the category winner, the other to decide between the category winners.
Without further stalling for time then here are the results…
Nominees: COD: Black Ops (16%), Halo: Reach (24%), Battlefield: Bad Company 2: (24%), BioShock 2 (8%). Winner: Vanquish (28%)
Nominees: Resonance of Fate (8%), Fallout: New Vegas (12%), Final Fantasy XIII (12%), Fable III 0%). Winner: Mass Effect 2 (68%)

Nominees: Call Of Duty: Black Ops (13%), Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (29%), Red Dead Redemption (3%), Halo: Reach (17%). Winner: Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit (38%)
After this initial stage, our nine winners (that’s right – Hot Pursuit picked up two first places) were grouped together, with a second vote taking place to decide the year’s greatest title, which resulted as follows…
Best Game Of 2010
Nominees: Halo: Reach (0%), Red Dead Redemption (18%), FIFA 11 (0%), Super Street Fighter IV (9%), Rock Band 3 (0%), Bayonetta (14%), Split/Second: Velocity (9%), Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (0%), Limbo (9%) Winner: Mass Effect 2 (41%)
So there you have it. The ‘which is better out of Red Dead and Mass Effect 2’ competition has been won by Mass Effect 2. Who’d a thunk it? Anyway, what all this means is that BioWare’s epic is scientifically the finest game of 2010 – at least so far as some of the UK’s finest videogame writers are concerned. Fact.
