Remake This… MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf

When mechs were fun…

We suppose we don’t really want a remake of MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf, more an actual sequel. Still, move this onto Live – with all the mulitplayer functions intact – and you’d have yourself a nice little original Xbox shooter. Both MechAssaults on the Xbox were some of the first games to really show the potential of the then-fledgling Live service.

The MechAssault series, set upon the planet Helios, had the barest bones of plots. All you need to know is bad people have massive robots and you have to take them down. As Lone Wolf expanded on the standard shooting in the huge mechs, it gave you the opportunity to hop out and have a wonder around as a tiny-sized unprotected human. It was a fantastic way of giving the robots a sense of size and scale, and helped immensely when shaking up the gameplay.

Lone Wolf also gave players access to a small human-sized mech suit that allowed you to zip about and hijack other larger suits. Again, another fantastic way to shake up the gameplay and we’re honestly surprised it’s never been copied since. Since the Chromehounds servers went quiet, Live has been without massive robots shooting rockets at each other – a true crime, we think you’ll agree.

The MechAssault games have always been surprisingly playable, and would be perfect for Live in its modern incarnation. Even if this didn’t receive a remake (and we only looked at it because we’re running out of classic point-and-click games to moan about), it would simply be enough to allow players to download it over Live. We wonder if anyone takes any notice of these posts…
