I’ve taken to playing a ridiculous amount of Test Drive Unlimited recently – no particular reason – I’m just in the mood.As the scenery was ripping past in a recent jaunt in an F40 I suddenly remembered that Atari promised me first dibs on the sequel not so long ago.
”I’ll let you know, mate” was the last I heard as the tanned PR whipped past the door of the office. So far I’ve heard nothing, but given the success of the first game (which some have credited as a big chunk of the reason for Atari’s escape from financial oblivion), I am expecting a first drive soon. The possibilities are mouth watering, with the promise of weather effects, day turning to night, more car customisation options, new vehicles of course, and all using an improved physics and handling engine, basic more on the ‘hardcore mode’ of the original. Given the success of the 6 downloadable car packs (kerching), you can also bet that Atari will follow this model, with a limited number of cars for launch, followed by more each month.
Funnily enough, even though I have probably spent £60 on the game plus the updates, I don’t feel ripped off because the updates have been little and often, and the value of the new cars far outweigh the tiny incremental cost via Xbox Live.Expect X360 magazine to be the first with Test Drive Unlimited 2 news soon.
